Get Over Yourself, You’re Gong To Have to Prospect, So Get Over Yourself!

One of my favorite movies is “A League of Their Own” staring Tom Hanks and Geena Davis.  If you don’t know the movie it is about the women’s baseball league that was started in the 1940’s to replace the men’s league because the men were all off fighting a war.  Geena plays the star player on the team and Tom is the coach.  Geena quits the team because her husband comes home from the war wounded.  When Tom asks her why she quits she says, “It just go too hard.”  Tom reply’s, “Hard, it’s supposed to be hard.  If it were easy everyone would be doing it.”

Most of us think that getting on the phone and prospecting is scary and difficult.  It’s hard and because of that few will even attempt to do it.  Some of us are naturals at it, but most of us have to learn it.  It’s an art.  It can be learned.

There are three types of prospectors.  The first are the naturals.  They love to prospect.  It is effortless to them.  They know how to work the numbers and they are good listeners.  They know how to listen for cues from what people say.  They know what people are really saying because they know how to listen.  They are the skilled pros.  Some of the people in this category are naturals and others have learned it the hard way.

The second are the uncomfortable and struggling prospectors.  This is where most people start.  They are not the natural born prospectors.  They are just learning the craft.  They are trying to figure it out.  This is where the most important lessons are learned.  They find a point of no return.  They know their vision and won’t be denied.  They will graduate into group number one when they practice become skilled pros.

The last group is the ones that are afraid to prospect.  They are locked in fear and take no’s personally.   They are getting ready to get ready.  They are good people with unresolved issues from their past.  The have a poverty consciousness, don’t know how to lead, fear the phone, have no goals, lack vision, have low self-esteem, no confidence, and self-sabotage.  People in this category will likely be stuck there unless they can get a clear goal and a big vision.  They must have this vision in order to overcome their emotions and past.

Prospecting is hard for many people.  That’s why few do it.  It doesn’t matter which category you are in you can become a master prospector if you learn to develop your craft.  Where are you in this process?
