Many of us have faced failure at one time or another in our
lives. We usually blame others for
it. It was to hard, there was too much
competition, or there were to many mean people.
Have you ever heard the saying “If it was easy everyone would be doing it.” That’s very true, however, you can get
through the tough stuff if you can get over yourself long enough to just do
it. The most difficult thing that we can
do is get over our past. We have past
failures, past hurts, and past disappointments that keep us from having the
life we were meant to have.
There are so many tragedy to triumph stories where people
just said to themselves “get over yourself” and they went on to live very
productive lives. One such story is of Helen Keller. She was born just like everyone else but when
she was very young she had a fever that left her blind and deaf. As a child she struggled in a dark and silent
world. Her parents didn’t know what to
do with her so they spoiled her and allowed her to do almost everything she wanted. Even dinner was a horrible chore because she
would just take what she wanted from everyone’s plate.
Helen’s mother was smart.
She started reading about the deaf and blind and the help that was
available to them. They hired a teacher
named Anne Sullivan who was schooled in helping the blind and deaf. Anne knew sign language and started teaching
Helen right away. At first Helen didn’t
understand what was happening. She just
thought that they were playing some sort of hand game. This went on for over a month until one day
Helen was getting water and Anne signed water into her hands. Helen got it and it opened up a world for
her.
Helen Keller became a famous author before she reached her
teen years. She went on to become one of
the most influential women of her time.
She was influential in the rights of the handicapped, women’s right to
vote, homeless rights, and labor movements.
She visited 39 countries before her death in 1968, just a few days short
of her 88th birthday. If she
can get over herself then why can’t you?
You need to just get over yourself and have the life that the Lord wants
for you.
