We live in a world where we believe that positive
reinforcement is the best way to get ourselves to lose weight, get started in
our business, or have something we want.
We encourage children with trophies of participation, not trophies for
winning. As parents we aren’t allowed to
punish our children but we must reinforce behavior by being positive. How often does that work? Sometimes you have to be tough on yourself in
order to get what you want in life.
Let me ask you, do you follow the speed limit because you
want to or because the cops will give you positive reinforcement if you follow
the speed limit? Or do you follow the
speed limit because you are afraid of the ticket and large fine you will
receive if you go over the speed limit.
Do you pay you taxes because Uncle Sam will give you a pat on the back
for paying your taxes or are you afraid of the IRS? It isn’t the positive reinforcement that
makes you follow the rules; it’s the negative consequences that make you follow
the rules.
That’s why so many people become successful when they become
desperate. I don’t know of one person
that became a success in a home-based business by having a lot of money and
doing the business. I know plenty that
were broke and thousands of dollars in credit card debt that made up their mind
to make it happen. They were not going
to be denied. They were going to make it
or break it. They made it, most made it
big.
I also know that many people will not go on a diet, lose
weight, or take care of themselves until they have the heart attack or get
cancer. It’s just a fact; humans are
wired not to do anything unless something goes wrong. We tend to stay in our little rut.
Will you be tough on yourself voluntarily? I doubt it.
It takes some kind of crisis in order for you to get out of your comfort
zone and do what it is that you know you should do. If you want to take off some extra pounds you
should do some kind of negative reinforcement in order to make it happen. I heard the story of a person that decided
that she would give to the most horrible charity that she knew if she didn’t
lose 30 pounds. Every time she took a
cookie she would think about the horrible charity she would not eat the
cookie. Guess what, she lost the 30
pounds.
What will it take for you to get tough on yourself and get
what you want in life? Will it take a
heart attack or some horrible disease to get you to take care of yourself? Will it take a financial crisis for you to
finally get into gear with your business?
So get tough on yourself and do what you are supposed to do.
