Is Leaving a Legacy Important – Five Good Reasons to Leave a Legacy

Are you leaving a legacy?  Solomon said in Proverbs 13:22 “A good man leaves an inheritance to his children’s children.  Is that you or are you just going about trying to get by from day to day not thinking about your tomorrow let alone the tomorrows or you children or grandchildren.

Leaving a legacy is one of the things that drive me.  I am about to be 60 years old and I know that I’m not going to be here forever.  I’m not ready to check out just yet but I am on the downhill side of life.  I want to make sure my kids and grandkids have something significant to remember me by when I’m gone.  Why is leaving a legacy so important.  Here are five reasons.

1.    It’s an ongoing part of the foundation of life.  Those who came before us have left us with the world we live in.  Good or bad, they have left their legacy for us.  We are stewards of the world, we have a calling one our lives to leave it at least the same or even better than when we found it.  It is our gift to future generations.
2.    It has power for good or bad.  Some people have changed the world for good while others have caused mass destruction and left people a wake of pain behind them wherever they went.  Think of Martin Luther King Jr. vs. Hitler.  Both left a legacy, but one was good and the other evil.  We as parents have an affect on our children.  We can leave our kids with greatness or leave them in ruin.
3.    It is an act of responsibility.  When we strive to leave a legacy, it is a great responsibility to choose to leave a positive legacy.  What makes us good and honorable people is having a part of our lives based on the goal of leaving a legacy.
4.    It breaks the downward pull of selfishness that can be inherent in all of us.  When we strive to leave a legacy it is about helping others.  We go beyond our own selfish egos and work selflessly to go beyond ourselves.
5.    It keeps us focused on the big picture.  A legacy is a part of the “big picture.”  When you are only focused on the “small picture” like working for a living and just paying the bills you are just working for yourself.  When you are working to leave a legacy it is not based on selfishness and personal expediency.  Ask yourself, what is your calling and overall goals?  How will this affect people in the years to come?

Everyone should have a dream and vision for their lives.  This vision should be something that will transcend the generations.  Does your vision transcend generations or is it something selfish?  That is a determination of whether it is from God or not.
