When it comes to having our God
given purpose we usually want to talk about things like winning, overcoming,
succeeding, and never giving up. We live
in a very competitive culture. The
Summer Olympics is just around the corner and we get all caught up in who
wins. The American press will get all
over someone who comes in second and gets the Silver Metal. They didn’t win. They didn’t get the gold.
How about we do the unthinkable
and surrender? I know surrender usually
means we are the loser. It evokes
unpleasant images of defeat in battle, losing a game, or yielding to a stronger
opponent. Perhaps it’s God’s will for us
to surrender to Him in order to have the life that He wants us to have.
“The Bible says, “I beseech you
therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that you present your bodies a
living sacrifice, holy, acceptable to God which is your reasonable service.”
(Romans 12:1)
Truly having our destiny doesn’t
come when we are in control, it comes when God is in control and we surrender
everything to Him.
Here are some of the things we
need to do to totally surrender.
1.
Trust
in God. Trust is essential to
surrender. You will never surrender to
someone if you don’t truly trust them.
Fear keeps us from trusting but love conquers all fear. God isn’t a slave driver that will use brute
force and scare tactics to make us surrender to Him. He is a loving and kind Father. Surrendering to Him brings freedom, not
bondage.
2.
Admitting
that we have limitations. Our pride
can be a big limitation to surrendering.
Our human spirit is very strong.
Our minds are also very strong.
We can overcome many things with just our human will. But many times we have to come to the end of
ourselves and stop struggling to admit we need help from a higher source. We aren’t God, we never can be. As strong as our spirit and minds can be we
will never have the strength and power that God has.
3.
Let
God take over. C.S. Lewis said, “The
more we let God take us over, the more truly ourselves we become—because He
made us. It is when I turn to Christ,
when I give up myself to His personality, that I first begin to have a real
personality of my own.” God knows the
personality He gave us. When we
surrender to Him, that personality will come out.
Surrendering to a human master usually means slavery, forced
labor, and degradation. However,
surrender to God means life, freedom, and the completion of why He put us here
in the first place. If you wish to accomplish
your destiny, surrender totally to the Lord.
