Have Your Destiny, Obey God in Faith

I love the song, “I am a friend of God.”  He wants to call us friend. However, He also says that we are His friend if we do what He commands us to do.  Jesus made it clear that we are to be in complete obedience to Him.  The Bible says in John 15:14 , “You are my friends, if you do whatever I command you.” 

Most of the time we don’t have to obey our friends so why does Jesus say that we need to obey Him to be His friend.  We are not just friends with Him, we are “friends with the king.”  Even though we friends we aren’t equals.  How can you be equal with God?  You can’t.  The thing is He knows everything from the beginning to the end.  He also knows all about you more than even you know.  He has the hairs on your head counted.  Why would we not want to obey Christ because He knows more than we do about ourselves?!

We obey God not out of duty or fear or compulsion like we would with most earthly kings, we obey Jesus out of love and we trust Him to know that He knows better than we and He knows what is best for us.  He died for our sins so we follow Him out of gratitude for all He has done for us.

Jesus is the greatest example of a loving relationship.  He had a loving relationship with the Father and did Jesus did what the Father wanted Him to do all the way to His death.  He said, “As the Father has loved me, so have I loved you: continue you in my love, If you keep my commandments, you shall abide in my love; even as I have kept my Father's commandments, and abide in his love. (John 15:9-11)  Keeping Jesus commandments like He kept the Father’s commandments is the ultimate act of love.

Jesus public ministry was only three and one-half years long.  He started when He was thirty years old.  What did He do for those thirty years.  He was obedient to God.  The first 30 years of His life can be summed up in just two words in Luke 2:51.  He “lived obediently.”  He was obedient to His earthly parents.  Thirty years of pleasing God were spent in a carpenters shop helping His parents.

Are you obedient to the Lord today?  If you want your destiny, you MUST obey the one who made you, loves you, and wants the best for you.  When the time comes He will pour out blessings on you so that you can fulfill your destiny.

Closeness to Your Destiny Means Being Honest with God!

How many times have you tried to live your destiny, dreams, or purpose only to have it wiped away?  I know I have.  I have worked to have the destiny the Lord wants for me for many years and it has not yet happened.  I’m almost at the point to where I quit.  I don’t want it anymore.  But I find that I’m not the only one that has had these issues.  Many Biblical characters have also had issues with their destiny and questioned God.  Others became bitter and complained to God about their circumstances.  Some even challenged God because they didn’t understand what was happening and why God was doing what He did.

James 4:8 says, “Draw close to God and He will draw close to you.”  One of the things that we need to do to draw close to God is to be totally honest with Him and how we feel about our circumstances.  I was always taught that we need to pray and if we questioned God we were being disrespectful.  That isn’t true.  God welcomed frankness from His people.  He even defends it. 

Who questioned, pestered, and complained to God.  Who even had doubts about His existence?

1.    David.  David was a “man after God’s own heart.”  (1 Samuel 13:14)  However, God listened patiently as David made accusations unfairness, betrayal, and abandonment. 

2.    Abraham.  Abraham was very disturbed with God over the destruction of Sodom.  He negotiated with God.  He pestered God over what it would take to spare the city.  He got it down from fifty to ten.  (Genesis 18:16-33)

3.    Job.  The whole book of Job is about his trials after he lost everything.  He was honest with God for being in his circumstances.  He complained to God.  God, however, defended Job for being honest with Him. (Job 42:7)

4.    Moses.  God told Moses that He would lead the Israelites.  God became fed up with the Israelites and was going to abandon them.  He told Moses He would keep His promise of giving them the Promised Land, but He wasn’t going one more step with them in the Desert.  Moses responded that he was going to call the trip off if God was not with them.  He basically said you sent me out here; you need to take care of me now. (Exodus 33: 12-17)

We all have doubts about our destiny and purpose at one time or another, but we can be totally honest with our Creator.  Tell Him how you feel.  He is honest enough to handle it.  He wants us to be honest with Him about our fears and doubts.  We also must remember that He is working everything out for our good.

Want Your Destiny? Be in Constant Contact with Your Creator

God created you to be in constant communication with Him.  He wants a relationship with you.  Your relationship with God has many different aspects.  He is your Creator, Maker, Lord, Master, Judge, Redeemer, Father, Savior, Friend the Sticks closer than a brother, Groom, and much more. 

In the Garden of Eden God had a constant, close relationship with God.  They were intimate friends.  Adam and Eve delighted in God, and He delighted in them.  After the fall that relationship was severed.  Some people in the Old Testament had relationships with God.  David was a “man after God’s own heart.”  Job, Enoch, Noah and others had intimate relationships with God, but idolatry and fear were commonplace in the Old Testament. 

The death of Christ brought us back to relationship with God.  He restored our relationship with God and sent the Holy Spirit to enlighten us.  Because of Jesus we can know our true destiny and have a restored relationship with God.  Jesus said,” No longer do I call you servant, for a servant does not know what his master is doing; but I have call you friend, for all things that I heard from My Father I have made known to you.” (John 15:15)

There are some things that we can do to have an intimate relationship with God and therefore have a better knowledge of our destiny.

1.    Be in constant conversation.  Having a close relationship with God doesn’t mean just attending church every week or having quiet time with Him every day.  It means to be in prayer constantly.  When we are about our day we need to be in constant contact and having an open conversation with Him.  The Bible says to “pray without ceasing.” (1 Thess. 5:17)  We need to practice His presence all the time.  He will tell us what He wants from us, what our destiny is, and how we can fulfill it.

2.    We need to be in constant meditation.  The best way to know someone is to be in constant meditation on what they have written.  I like to watch the show “Little House on the Prairie.”  Because I have watched the show and read some of the Little House books I feel I know Laura Ingalls Wilder personally.  I was only a year old when she died so that was impossible, but the best way to get to know someone is by reading about them and studying there words.  The best way to know your purpose and destiny is by meditating on God’s word and getting to know God.  His revelation of your destiny will be revealed because He loves you enough to reveal it and help you live it.

If you truly wish to have a great purpose in life you must know the one who sent you here and gave it to you in the first place.  God is that person.  He wishes to love you, allow you to know Him, reveal His heart to you (your purpose), and help you become the person that can have this great purpose.

Why Should you Surrender?

Surrender, it is such a horrible word in today’s world.  We think of it as giving up.  An army surrendering to a superior foe is what we usually think of as surrender.  There are other things that we conjure up in our minds when we think of the word surrender.  How about giving up completely.  We are taught in our society never, never to surrender or give up.

But the surrender I’m talking about isn’t this kind of surrender.  It’s surrendering your life to a loving God who cares deeply about you and wants you to have the best life He can give.  That kind of surrender is the way to great things in your life and to have the purpose and dreams He gave you.  Stop thinking that you have to do everything and let God do what He wants to do in your life.  You will accomplish more and do more.

The Bible says, “Now acquaint yourself with Him and be at peace.” Job 22:21.  If you live at peace with God you will have great things happen in your life.  What are those great things?

1.    You experience peace and freedom.  You will experience the “the peace of God that surpasses all understanding.” (Phil. 4:7) You can know that everything including your destiny is in His hands when you surrender to Him.  You will also have the freedom to do what you need to do without fear.  Fear only comes when we are afraid.  With God in your corner you have no need to be afraid.

2.    You experience God’s power.  Overwhelming problems can be overcome if they are given to God.  He has all the power and money in the world.  William’s Booth, the founder of the Salvation Army said, “The greatness of a man’s power is in the measure of his surrender.”  A surrendered person is the one that God uses.

3.    It’s the best way to live.  We are all surrendered to someone or something.   If not to God, you surrender to other’s expectations, to money, to your own pride, lusts, or ego.  He put you on this earth to do something great.  Surrender to Him is the best way to have that great purpose you know you have.

Sometimes it will take years to totally surrender to God.  I know in my life I have surrendered a lot of things to the Lord.  The one thing that I have a difficult time surrendering to Him is my finance.  I struggle with finances because I can’t totally give that are of my life to Him.  Therefore, I also struggle with my destiny because I don’t have the finances that I need to fulfill it.  This stops now.  I am going to totally surrender to Him so I can have the destiny that He wants for me.
