Blocking Your Potential, What’s Blocking Your Potential as an Entrepreneur?

Do you actually like working for someone else?  So many of us want to break free of the work a day world and go out on our own.  Is that you?  But what is blocking your potential?  What’s keeping your from becoming that great business man or woman and getting that dream that you aspire to?

One of the things that are blocking your potential as a possible entrepreneur is your own attitude.  Let’s face it being out on your own is a very scary thing to do.  You are solely responsible for everything.  That’s a scary thing.  Could it be that the one thing that is blocking your potential is your own thinking?

I worked for a living for many years.  I was told when I was a child that the only way to make it in the world was to work hard.  My parents were ranchers and the hours were long and hard on a ranch.  But they wanted me to go into corporate America.  It was the 1970’s and corporate jobs were in ample supply.  I worked in corporate America and I was very successful at it, but my own mindset poisoned me for achieving the success that I desired in business.

You become a prisoner of your own thoughts.  One of the things that you learn in corporate America is just to do the minimum.  You don’t go out of your way to do any more that exactly what you have to do.  That is the employee mindset.  Check you thinking and see if that’s what is really happening to you?  Is that your way of thinking?

We have to get out of the employee mindset in order to be successful in business.  Here are three clues that you are trapped in an employee mindset.

1.     You resent your clients.  Everyone gets a bad client now and then, but if you resent most of your clients and blame them for your lack of money or success then you need to stop blaming them.  Here’s the issue the problem is you!  Your success is all about the choices you make on a daily basis.  The responsibility is yours.  Here’s the good news, your choices can make you miserable or the can make you happy.  The choice is yours and you can change it.

2.     You lead with the problem.  When someone asks you how you’re doing in business do you start with how bad things are going?  If you have a problem-based dialogue this is a symptom of a greater problem: your mindset.  If you start every conversation with what’s going wrong then you are likely using that problem as an excuse not to be your best.  Whatever the problem is your thinking of right now you need to start with writing down three ways you can improve this problem and ask for help seeing it in a new way.

3.     You long for the days when you were employed.  Do you ever wish for the “good ole days” when you were employed?  Do you long for the security of a regular paycheck and having someone decide when you work, what you do, and how long you do it?  If you spent years wanting out of the job and now you want back there is probably one thing holding you back and that is fear.  The only way to get over the fear is to work your way through it by doing the thing you fear the most.

You need to take responsibility for you own circumstances and realize that being an entrepreneur means that you are going to have to change your mindset, get over the fear, and just go for it.  You are the one that is blocking your potential, not someone else.

In order to become a success you need to get over the mindset that is blocking your potential.
